Twelve-year-old Szofi’s life is totally chaotic: her parents are divorced, her mother has gotten together with Szofi’s chess coach, and her father is never around when she needs him. On top of that, the county finals of the youth chess championship are about to begin, and although her dad promised to come, he’s not even answering his phone… as if he’s vanished into thin air. Szofi refuses to go to the competition until her father arrives, so she locks herself in the basement. In a dark corner, she finds an ancient chessboard with a game already in progress. On the board, in old-fashioned lettering, there’s a mysterious message: “move you may, move you must as well” Szofi picks up a piece, makes a move… and is transported into another universe.
In this thrilling adventure story, which blends the rules of chess with Indian mythology and the realm of fantasy, Szofi is swept into a war between two kingdoms. She must lead the army of the White King in a battle that seems hopeless, and in the end, she must face both the fearsome Dragon Bishop and the Black Queen. Along the way, she encounters allies as well as enemies, but she alone bears the responsibility for her decisions, and every move has consequences… and after a while, she comes to realize that, despite appearances, this world is not simply black and white. The stakes are not only the future of the two kingdoms, but by the end of the game, the fate of Szofi’s family will also be decided. Through the adventure, the audience also gains insight into how much the game of chess can teach us about life’s many different challenges.
