Jeanne Teller’s world-famous young adult-book is full of bold questions. It’s been called a nihilist children’s book, the “new Lord of the Flies”, first they prohibited it in Denmark, then it became compulsory reading, it won countless awards and rabbled many scandals all around the world. It is provocative indeed, which asks the deepest, most hurtful questions, and invites the reader to dispute, debate, confront and to find our own answers.
„Nothing matters. I have known that for a long time. So nothing is worth doing. I just realized that.” – says eight grader Pierre Anton, and with that he walks out of class, and climbs upon a plum tree from where he shouts away the futility of life. His classmates decide to prove him wrong, and start to collect things, “meaningful things”, for it worths to live for. The bike that his owner has been saving up for years, a diary, a girl’s long hair…the insistence that started as a game soon gets out of control. Everybody becomes vulnerable, and loses the most important things, as the “heap of meaning” grows and devours everything.
