Greetings
An old dream of ours is now coming true. A dream of a festival that brings the most exciting creators of contemporary international puppetry to Budapest.
For years we've been planning, talking, dreaming: walking the streets full of puppeteers at festivals abroad, sitting in front of our laptops during the pandemic, scrolling through Instagram pages of puppeteers from far-away countries on the tram. How wonderful it would be if Budapest audiences could see how colourful, large-scale, and diverse the puppet genre is! A genre that we love passionately, that we strongly believe in, and that leads us on new journeys.
We have imagined a festival that inspires, entertains, gives a different perspective, opens new doors. A festival that invites our company members, our puppet colleagues, and our audience on an exciting journey. One that will show the extremes of the genre, from the giant puppet parading along Andrassy Avenue to Mottram's five white ping-pong balls, from large-scale shows to minimalist abstraction.
We dreamed up a festival that would give the opportunity to artists from Mexico to France, Poland to South Africa, to meet across borders, languages, and cultures. We all speak the same language: the language of movement, rhythm, image, abstraction.
Welcome to the 1st ABSTRACT Festival, part of the Theatre Olympics!

The Abstract - 1st Budapest International Contemporary Puppet Festival is an uncoming spring event of Budapest Puppet Theatre, offering Hungarian professional puppeteers and audiences the opportunity to learn about and be inspired by the trends of contemporary puppetry.
The festival, which will take place from 6 to 19 May 2023, will be horoured by prestigious artists and greats of the profession, such as Dutch puppeteer Duda Paiva, who is happy to return to our country, Stephen Mottram from England, and South-African-born Janni Younge. We will also be hosting some of the most exciting performances from France, Spain, Mexico and beyond. The festival programme is designed to appeal to all audiences, from children to adults, because we believe that puppetry is a genre that is not age specific.
We also provide opportunities for young talents, so the audience can also meet sophomore students of the Master of Arts in Puppetry at the University of Arts Târgu Mureș.
At the opening ceremony of Abstract Festival, we will open our doors, and bring a parade of giant puppets to the streets, and a concert with special atmosphere to our main stage, getting ready to celebrate the puppetry genre together for two weeks as part of the Theatre Olympics.
