The beginning of our story is simple, simple, just as young Krabat's past was simple. It was, until a Black Mill appeared before him in a dream, with black crows inside, and a one-eyed Master of Black Magic.

Krabat follows his dream, enters the mill, shakes hands with the Master, but this simple handshake seals his fate, he can never leave the Black Mill again. Simplicity is replaced by mysterious, inexplicable events. Slowly, it becomes clear that the Mill is a Black School, and that the students are being given special abilities in return for their work.

Krabat and his friends, the apprentices, experience the limits of their abilities and the price they must pay.

Krabat rebels and fights for freedom, but he is powerless against his Master. Powerless, unless he recieves help by the mysterious, pure hearted cantor girl, whose name must never be spoken - so that the Master never finds out about her - who must enter the Black Mill for the final trial, so that Krabat can get out. Getting in is easy, but getting out is either neither of them, or only together.

One of the most popular works of German youth literature, Otfried Preuβler's novel Krabat is a grippingly exciting story of friendship, community, magic and growing up. This brand-new puppet adaptation of the classic story, which has been adapted for film and stage several times, is written by Ágnes Kali and Máté Hegymegi.
